Bullying of Student’s with Disabilities May Violate Federal Law

department of educationYesterday the United States Department of Education office of Special Education and Rehabilitation Services (OSERS) issued a notice to school districts that districts permitting the bullying of students with disabilities may be in violation of the law.  In the notice published yesterday the Depatment states that bullying often results in lower academic achievment, truancy and other issues with the target of the bullying.  In the Department of Education’s oppinion schools that permit bullying of students with disabilities are in violation of the requirement that school districts offer a Free and Appropriate Education as well as other civil rights violations.
