2015 Social Security COLA Increase

I’ve received a few questions already asking what the 2015 Cost of Living Adjustment (also known as COLA Increase) for Social Security Recipients would be.  The Cost of Living Adjustment is paid out to all social security recipients, including those on SSI, SSDI (Disability) and RSDI (retirement) in order to cover the increased expenses in the last year.

BREAKING NEWS UPDATE: 2015 Social Security COLA Increase Has Been Announced.  Click here to see how much you will get in 2015 for Social Security!

How Will The 2015 COLA Increase Be Determined

Social Security determines the Cost of Living adjustment for 2015 by looking at the cost of living for Urban and Clerical Workers (CPI-W) from the third quarter of 2013 and comparing it to the CPI-W for the 4th quarter.

When Will the 2015 Social Security COLA Increase Be Announced

The Social Security COLA Increase for each year is typically announced in late October, however it is easily determined by looking at the CPI-W for the third quarter as its released by the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

  1. since gas food and all consumer items which are all needed to sustain the poorest way of life are not considered a cost of living probably not enough to make a difference the last decent raise we had came in the george bush era 6.4% since we have had 2 years of nothing which is the first time since the 1970,s and 3 years of insulting raises which made no difference ask one of obama’s good wall street buddies if they could live on $750.00 per month they spend that much on a weekend meal at a fancy restaurant maybe they should try a happy meal what is more disturbing they consider ss an entitlement not all but most people on ss paid in there whole lives with a promise of security after retirement this is a GD DISGRACE

  3. I agree with Jack Taylor & William Barker completely. Increases in gas & food prices need to be included in the COLA formula. These are things we need to live!! And another thing….Medicare does not pay for glasses, dental or hearing aids. And who needs these the most? Seniors!! It’s like handing a starving person a box of candy & telling them they can only look but not touch.

Actually I came in here to tell you my thoughts on the COLA percentage increases. By using a percent formula, the poorest & the neediest lose out. Increasing a recipient’s $1000 monthly benefit by 1% amounts to an $10/mo increase. But increase a recipient of $2000/mo by 1% & that person will get a $20/mo increase. $20 doesn’t sound like a big increase but that extra $10/mo can help pay the sky rocketing cost of groc or gas. Ahhhh yes….the rich get richer. The poor who get the $10/mo increase are losing out. Soon they won’t have enough to survive on. And all this from the richest country in the world?!! You are stealing money from we who have paid into it all of our lives. It is OUR money, NOT YOURS!!

  4. I get $897 a month Disability and trying to live after paying rent, utilities, and cable ( because I have to have a TV since I am stuck at home with my disability) and I live in a mobile home in a senior park and have to pay property tax and Insurance it leaves me about $150 a month for food and hygiene products. Who can do that? I am doing it but sometimes I have to choose whether I pay utilities or eat. I am 62 and didn’t choose to be disabled so why are they treating us like this? I can’t get food stamps and I cannot drive so I can’t get to a food bank to get food. There is no assistance for help with mobile home space rent or help to pay taxes or insurance. Something has to be done. We are going down hill fast.

  5. my husband and I are both on disability. you can’t make it on what little you get even with medicare medicine is outrageous.
It is a shame that we live in a nation that is free as long as you are working and paying taxes, but when something happens and you don’t work anymore you are no good to them. I don’t know what to do we either make $20 to much or $20 to little to get any kind of help. it just not right when you have worked all your life I went to work when I got our of high school. I worked 34 1/2 years and so did my husband all I can say it is a shame how older people are treated.

  6. Depending on the state you live, there is some help depending on your income. There are some seniors who get a pretty large amount of Social Security depending on how much they paid into it. If you didn’t pay much into Social Security then you then you may be eligible for low income assistance with rent, utilities, medical etc. And some people do not know how to live within their means. You have to search online in your area for assistance for rent, utilities, etc. If you cannot afford your medication you can contact the company that makes the drug you take and they will pay all or part of your costs. I have done that and they paid for everything. If you make below $1000.00 a month you should be able to get Medicaid that pays for all medical and medications. You may be able to get food stamps or get rental assistance . But if your income is more then the max then you will have to learn to budget. Its not easy but I do it and I pay more then 1/2 of my income for rent and utilities, and it is a struggle but I can do it. I should of planned better for old age. I also had to be willing to live is senior housing that the government helps to pay for. But I doubt it will change in our lifetime so you have to learn to live with what we have. It sucks but that’s all we have right now.

  7. I receive 1100.00 after Medicare and Part D premiums. I have a net gain of 12.00 per month. The Part D premium goes up 10.00. Two lousy dollars. It might buy me half a gallon of gas. Huzzah? Where’s the benefit? Is there a benefit?

  8. Yes, 1% of $20,000 yields twice as much as 1% of $10,000. That’s just common sense arithmetic. What all who think this is unfair ought to remember is that everyone paid 7.65% of income (up to prescribed limits) in FICA taxes. The more you paid in the more you get out. That’s not stealing–that’s just common sense arithmetic. Now, try this on for unjust: many of those who paid the most in FICA taxes get hit with higher Medicare premiums. Why? The benefits are the same for all. How is this fair? Should level of income determine how much we are charged for groceries. Comprende?

  9. The whole deal is im on diability too. Ssdi and what the whole deal is those punks are looking out for their paychecks. They cut everything. Foodstamps. Worcester county school system has not gotten a raise for their employees for about9years. Its not right i know im retired from there due to diability reasons. All this is so they can continue to get their bonuses and raises off of the hard earned money and taxes we pay. They claim washington dont have money. Look at all the big parties and get togethers they throwing ofg of the taxes we pay. Taking from. Our childrens mouths. The president makes 563ooo dollars a year. Get 20,000. For vacation time and 2bonusrs a year. The president taking from us tooto cover his paychek. Tje senateCogress mayors. Councilmens all them bastards.they are making sure they are going to get their paychecks. Usa got money. If they didnt why is they sending millions over seas instead of taking care of our own that need to eat and feed our children cutting us. More troops being sent to iraq afganistan. Those bastards were ready to cut our troops who give their lives for their country to save their paychecks. Not doing nothing but sitting on their rumps fighting over money greed for themselves covering their behinds. And you wanna know why i dont vote. Cause why should i vote for loosing my own money i worked so hard for paying the high crooks and have paid in to ss all my life ive worked and than still have to get money taken out to pay part b of medicaid. Its a shame. They cut stamps in half now where the families are out of food for their kids specially single moms two weeks before or three weeks before they come again. Kis scratching for food. Its a crying shame how greedy the government and crooked theve gotten. And be glad when god intervene and destroy all these wordly government and use his government to stand indefinite to fix this mess and bring to ruin all these bastards whos ruoning their own mankind. Ill never vote for man who cant direct his own step. How he gonna direct mines or yours

  10. We can bitch all day long but this is not going to change in our life time. I wish I was getting Social Security instead of SSI/SSDA because I could at least work without it being deducted. We will just have to learn to budget better. I do budget and am paying bills but have nothing left.. learning how to shop for food and making sure we at least pay our rent and utilities and Insurance is most important. If you have other bills like credit cards etc., you may have to not pay those and not worry about your credit because you most likely will not be buying a new car or home and so credit really doesn’t matter. I wish I had the $1100. a month some of you are getting. I had to move into a place that was cheap enough that I could afford. They also have free cell phone service for low income people and senior housing that goes by your ability to pay but they have a long waiting list usually but at least get on waiting list. Keep checking online in your area for programs that will help you.. good luck

  11. Why Are you dedukting 30 %. Just becaus i am Austrian citizen. Thats not fair. I served in the US Army during the Bietnam war. 1963-1965.You can write me a letter. Addres Esslinger Hauptstrasse 9 38. 1220 Vienna Austria. I had a stroke. 11091941. Birthday. Thank you, Johann.

  12. Why would not vote some of theses people out of office. You cannot bitch about who is controlling the money when you do not vote I am on disability I vote every time

  13. J Hall , You said, ” I wish I was getting Social Security instead of SSI/SSDA because I could at least work without it being deducted” If you could be working why are you getting SSI/SSDA ?

  14. I can’t work but I am hoping one day I will be able to work alittle. I just had spinal cord surgery and there are no guarantees I will get better but I hope I do.

  15. While living on SSDI is really a shame the pay is low each month it is impossible to live on such a small income and breaking my back in a 24 ft. fall is no joke. Since we cannot depend on SSDI to function normally like our goverment thinks we can live on such a small amounts, maybe we should all depend on each other and help each other. Since our government can even help us, God pray for ourselves as we pray for a better alternative than the USA!!

  16. It is not easy to live on disability but you have to be creative. I get free cell phone from assurancewireless.com but I live in CA and they have a free program for Cali low income people, just check what they have in your area. Also there is utility assistance of a one time credit of $200-$300 through HEAP check to see if it is available in your state. I shop for food that’s on sale and make a lot of vegi soup. Cabbage and red potatoes, chicken/beef stew, chilli, etc make a big pot and freeze part of it for another day. I make sun tea to drink it is cheaper then soda. I have a filtered water bottle I drink water from instead of buying bottled water. You can look for rental assistance or low rent apts. I know they are not always in good areas but you have to do what ya have to do. I sold my home and bought a mobile home so not I have a cheap space rent $363 a month plus utilities. It is a struggle but I do it. I hope some day I won’t have to struggle but I do what I have to now.

  17. People need to remember, it’s not just seniors being affected. I’m 43 and permanently disabled from a stroke when I was 37. Yes I get ssd, but by the time I pay my bills, Medicare premiums and part D, I have $150 left to live on. That’s for groceries, medicine, gas, glasses. They say I make $100 a month too much in ssd to get ssi, food stamps or any other kind of help. So most of the time I eat once a day, I have to pick which meds to take, haven’t had new clothes or shoes in years. I don’t go out, unless it’s to the doctor or the grocery store. Haven’t had new glasses in five years. Younger disabled people are in this too.

  18. I wasn’t talking about seniors if you were referring to me. Age has nothing to do with it. After I pay my rent, utilities including water, sewer, trash, property tax, insurance, food, meds, glasses, house supplies I have nothing left. I have $100.00 for food and gas so I don’t drive much. But we don’t have to compare what we pay, we know it is hard. I go to churches and food banks for food. I can’t get food stamps either in Cali. so we all are in the same boat. I go online every day looking for resources and some have income levels of $25,000 or less to get assistance. I don’t know what they have where you all live. I go to churches and food banks for food and sometime they help with toilet paper, soap etc. If you make a big pot of soup, chili, stew, spagetti, etc. that can last a week for each one. PBand J, but I am sure you know all that. I have been homeless with nothing so I know the struggle. I have had to really down size and change my priorities. I grow some veggies in pots outside and that helps. Maybe we need to exchange ideas to help us get by because the income isn’t gonna change for some time if at all. I am hoping I can figure out how to make extra money, but it is hard when I can’t use my hands very much or walk very well. But I still have a brain at least for now LOL. I hope we can all help each other. Even if it is just to yell about how hard it is.. Take care all

  19. What the people in congress don’t know is that by 2032 we will run out of money for the people that are on SS and after that there are going to be alot of people standing in line for help. A nd think about this who is going to help the people out there sure not the people that have alot of money and as for retirement its 68 they are trying to pass it so it will be 70 well by that time why retire there will be no Social Sercurity after 2032 everybody will just have to work tell they drop at work. I am mad because me and my wife are on SSD and here we are trying to raise 2 grandkids and here 1 has austism and here they are talking about slashing are checks to me I believe that they can find away to save and help the people instead of hurting the people that built this country.

  20. I was getting 967.00 a month and they cut $204.00 for medical plan right now I am getting less which is $ 700.00 how can I live off this every month can’t get food stamp there gave me 10.00 I told them to keep it because I can’t live off 10.00. what kind of country we live in it going to take God to pull them people down and pray.

  21. Have you gone to the Obama care web site? I know a lot of people who went there and got financial assistance. I applied for Medicaid with my other insurance and I don’t have to pay anything. I do not know what state you live in but look in your state, or it may tell you on the Obama care website. I always look online to see what services there are to assist in lowering my bills. I get free unlimited cell phone, I get a once a year payment sent to the utilities to cover some of my bills, about $300. But I am in Cali. We all have to be our own advocate and research for programs to help ourselves. There are food banks and churches for food and sometimes hygiene products. Do a search online in your area. Hope that helps.

  22. The prices for everything, that people need to live, need to be included in the cost of living calculations. I’d love for the politicians to support 2 adults on what I was getting in 2001-2006. My husband had a stroke, and due to not being American, didn’t qualify for disability. His disability benefits from the UK were only payable if he was living there.

  23. Social Security and Disability are great Programs and you have the option to work or make passive income – its also one of those programs that you get what you pay into it. On the other hand – if you work for the Government you will end up quite well – the problem with America is Wall Street and the Bankers and the Large Corporations – they are all for Profit – this is why people at Wal-Mart have to be on food stamps as they work for a FOR Profit corporation . In the 80s The private sector paid the most and government jobs paid the least – they are service sector jobs. Today a policeman starts out at 80,000 a year – in the private sector your lucky to get 15 dollars an hour , the bad news id when these large multibillionaire corps that are for profit don’t take care of their workers – most people will end up on SSI…and unless something happens this will put a burden on the system and collapse the whole economy. So they are going to need to do something. I know I was an electricians in the eights Union Scale was 35 an hour – today non union 80% of the private sector hammered down by the Large Corporations makes max 25 an hour – in the eighty’s gas was 90 cents a gallon – today gas is 4 dollars a gallon – the money that the billionaire’s gets after the corporations extract the wealth goes to offshore bank accounts – the money that people get on disability and ssi – 70% of that goes back into the economy anyway – so my suggestion is – being we have been printing money for 4 years to keep the economy afloat – the 2015 COLA should be 5% just like it was in the 70s when times were hard to boost the economy… Doesn’t really matter the money goes back into the economy… So lets kick it up a notch this year… 🙂

  24. The increase is an insult! I did not ask to be disabled!!! But like so many others, I cannot afford a car, food, medicine, dentist or glasses. This is sad that the United States doesn’t take better are of their own! I only eat once a day and pick which medicines I get. Glasses? Can’t afford a new or used pair. Teeth? I guess they have to rot because Medicare won’t pay for preventive but will for false teeth!

  25. I don’t know where you live but because my disability income is so low I also get a small check from SSI. I get Medicaid/medi-cal and they now include preventative dental. My income is only $897 a month and Medicaid pays for everything I need health wise. I know it is hard but I make it. I go to food banks and because I am disabled I get hot lunch delivered to my house M-F and it makes my food cost go down. I have had to do without a lot of things like getting new clothes, or go out to eat. I have a free cell phone and that saves a lot. Its hard to ask for help but I have learned that if I don’t ask I won’t get. Keep searching for new programs that will help you. If I have programs here I am sure you have them there. Good luck

  26. why vote. it does not count because the electrol college decides who gets it, not the popular vote, i don’t vote for that very reason

  27. Responding to the first post by Mr. Taylor, It amazes me how ignorant people are to this subject. Now the so called great mr Reagan changed the cpi so that Groc Gas ETC. would not be figured into Cola,as for Obama and wall street buddies you might ought to l ook again they are the buddies of the republican party, if your a working person or on any kink of social security you need to learn how to vote. never never ever vote for a republican. The reason you got more money when George buuh was pres. is because everything that counted in the cpi went up it wasen’t because he wanted to give you a raise WAKE UP AMERICA.

  28. This is so, so sad, a country that is as Wealthy as the U S A , treating it’s Seniors And Handicap like second class citizens, iam 66yrs.old, even with Medicare, I still have to pay 20% , plus when I have DR. Visits, there is a Co- Pay, the 20.00 that we are going to get… ? Are we suppose to be happy?? My Co- Pays are $20 and $ 25, every month.

  29. if you are getting $20 increase your Social security your income is twice as much as mine..I wish I had your Social Security I could pay rent, utilities and food with no problem and I live in So. Cali. where it is very expensive. I know to you your income is nothing and because our income is so low we need to learn to live within our means. That means move into senior housing or do like I did and sold my home and bought a nice older mobile home with the equity I got in a mobile home park with cheap space rent of $363 a month. I wish it was in a better area but its in a clean park and I had to go to a place I could afford. I go to food banks and grocery shop wisely. If your income is to high to get assistance then you really have to down size your life and budget. That $20 you are getting at least pays that co-pay you were talking about. Contact drug manufacturers to get help with medications. You have to spend your time now looking for new programs that help. Also look for a medicare insurance without a copay, they do exist. We all had warnings from Social security about what we could expect our income to be with the estimates we receive. I hate what we have to live on too but until it changes it is what it is and only our actions will change it. Many people are trying to live on less the $700 a month. I live on $897 and I can’t get food stamps. Like I have said many times, I go to food banks, got free cell phone, applied for utility assistance, I don’t buy clothes, I have to wear what I have until they fall apart or get used ones from churches. I can’t buy grand kids gifts, or get my nails and hair done, have to buy food that’s on sale and go early in the morning to get meat and other markdowns. This is my new job now finding deals and programs that help.I also started a small veggie garden.. I am making it, not easy but it can be done.

  30. My income is not high,I also get SSI and Social Security, live in low income housing,do most of my shopping for,(clothing, shoes, purses)at a local Thrift store.Which offers amazing contemporary as well as reto clothing. And am constantly complimented and recieving inquiries, regarding my attire! Last but not least,I am greatful for, running water, indoor plumbing, food on my table(go to food pantrys )and a roof over my head!THERE ARE Soooo MANY PEOPLE LESS FORTUNATE THAN ……I So I count my Blessings!!!

  31. #1. To all pf you complaining abpout how little you get each month from SS.. You paid in very little.. SS pays out huge compared to what yuo paid in..
#2. Did you work for cash a lot? Thought you were screwing Uncle Sam and Not paying for roads and schools and the Military.. hahaha Jokes on you hahahaa
#3. All You have to live on is SS then be darn thankful Uncle Sam took what little he did each pay day or you would have NOTHING!
#4. Living on SSDI ? Proven Fact OVER 50% should not be getting anything…. Your are just LAZY!

  32. Mr. Ham,
I have worked from age seven to help feed my family. I have never not paid my fair share, but I never thought for one day, that I would be told I had health problems that the doctors could not do any thing for, I had just lost my only child three years Pryor, my mother and then my husband. I also went on my own dime to specialist for 4. Years before they finally found out what was wrong. I filed for disability and after jumping through enough red tape, with the government I got a whopping 320.00 a month. No food stamps no ssi as I felt I had traded enough self respect to have to file to begin with. My muscles have wasted away I have heart problems, I found out this year I am now a diabetic with crippling arthritis
Three very bad discs in my back and sir I can not remember the last night I laid down and actually slept. I would gladly trade it all for being able to work 40+hrs a week. And go out with friends for lunch. Loosing your independence to button your own shirt can take its toll on a person to save for Retirement and to have had a child call me mommy would have fulfilled my life. I pray you never have to live the indignant life I have had. Just remember don’t judge my life unless you are willing to walk in my shoes!!. Why not ask why the government has taken money from the social security system and left billions upon billions of IOU’s never repaid. Excuse after excuse, now it,s the baby boomers fault. We’ll then wouldn’t we have paid more in because there is more of us not less???? Oh and we pay taxes on that income, as well as part B. And if you fall into the donut hole then you cut your meds in half and eat every other day. Yea I’m living large off of the government. God bless and have a healthy life.

  33. All the Millions or Billions of dollars our government wastes on stupid stuff like un-necessary research grants or other wasteful spending, surly Senior citizen and the disabled deserve a cost of living raise that is usable. The 1.7 percent they call a raise is a big joke. What the hell is a couple of dollars going to do to help, especially after Obama destroyed our economy causing the rise in price for everything one needs to buy? They take most of it to pay Medicare. This is really maddening and causes real anger in me. I hope all the jerks in congress die! I hope the next time Obama gets on a plane the plane crashes!

  34. Obama Care Worked For Me.

As a US Army veteran who did not receive a battle injury to my mouth I do not qualify for dental care at a VA Health Facility. When I was able to get a Dental Ryder via Medicare D under the G.W. Bush administration I thought it was a God send. Then came the details. The for profit insurance company I was assigned to did not allow me to see the dentist I knew and trusted. This happened even though he provided low cost care at a local clinic.

The dentist the for profit insurance company sent me to charged higher rates and the insurance company only covered the first thousand dollars of a 6 thousand dollar dental bill. The insurance companies dentist rushed me into a “Medical Credit Card” made available under W. Bushes health care law. The insurance companies dentist got me in over my head on Credit Card debt before I had time to even think. Even though this was supposed to help low income people the “Care Card” has a contract that allows them to charge up to 21% interest.

I went for 5 years on the verge of loosing my very modest house and was forced to use the food pantry to eat while paying off the “Medical Credit Card”. I also had to stop making my co-pays at the VA Outpatient clinic. I did not have money for follow up dental care so I went without that for 5 years as well.

I tried really hard to pay the “Medical Credit Debt” ahead of schedule because making minimum payments would have doubled the cost of treatment while making the credit company rich. I avoided Medical Bankruptcy and Foreclosure only because I get most of my health care at the VA.

Then with the medicaid expansion from Obama Care here in NY I was able to qualify for medicaid and I was able to see my former dentist. Yes it was a bit of a hassle getting medicaid sorted out but for me the problem was caused by the for profit insurance company. They failed to update information on their database.

My oral surgeon refused me because the old insurance kept showing up in my record. The oral surgeon had trouble with that for profit insurance company and would not treat me until I was able to trace down the problem and get it them removed from the record.

Once that was resolved I was able get dental care for the first time in 5 years.

No doubt Obama Care has its problems but it works for this disabled Army Veteran. Problems with setting up The Affordable Care Act were expected because the Republicans were doing everything they could to prevent it from working. Did you know that the private contractors assigned the task of setting up the internet applications were hold overs from the W. Bush administration? Their contract was set to last well into the Obama Administration and they were loyal to Republicans; not the American People.

The Republican’s government shutdown From October 1 through 16, 2013 may have interfered with the Affordable Care Act roll out as well. So there is plenty of blame to go around. The American people must stop putting political ideologues into office and elect Congressmen who will work for the good of the country instead of Billionaires and Big Corporations.

    Why are politicians like diapers?

They both need to be changed frequently and for the same reason.

  35. dolores f evans,

I don’t know your specific situation but I do know that the Republicans are trying to cut Social Security Disability. Social Security can be fixed and made stronger. It is not an entitlement. It is paid for by the American People. Social Security should be treated separate from the budget because it is paid for separately. Attempts to “balance the budget” by reducing Social Security is a theft of money paid by workers to ensure their future. Social Security is even more important now that Big Corporations are eliminating pensions. Remember Enron?

  36. Does anyone know if it is possible to decline the COLA increase on SSDI? I am now $5 per month over the guidelines for my daughter’s insurance through the state of Florida. My premium will go from $15 to $200. I’m beside with stress. Any ideas?

  37. I truly think that the House and Senate needs to re-work the 12.7% to read about 6% this year as well as the following years also. We can’t vote our selves a raise like you do but we can do one thing better. That’s just vote you asses out of office. If you are getting comfortable in your easy chairs it is time you might just have to get up and do something. We don’t like the Democrats as they totally are a do nothing Congress but if you give us no choice then start packing your bags now. Most of you act like what you get paid is an entitlement and now a check for your work. Your work is slipping very badly. We expected Obama to be removed from office and you all have done nothing at all. We all expected a lot more that you haven’t done so start doing for a change. Work with what Democrats are in the House and Senate to accomplish the jobs you were elected to do. This is not a threat but a promise. Evict Obama. We need a president as he has shown so many times that he isn’t. You better do it before the end of the year.
